Are you thinking of moving to Spain next year and are confused about how to go about it in a legal way? It’s a question we are receiving understandably more and more from enquiring clients.
The good news? You are still going to be able make the move, it’s just going to take a few more steps. Luckily, there are companies that will do all the legal leg work for you.
Since Monday 6th of July 2020, the Immigration Offices and the National Police stations are issuing a new residency card for British citizens coming to live to Spain during the rest of the transitory period (up to the 31/12/2020) and, with it, a new residency status specifically created pursuant to the Withdrawal Agreement (Part Two), published jointly by the EU and the UK on the 14th of November 2018.
UK nationals residents in Spain prior to the 31st of December 2020 will have the rights to residency, freedom of movement and Social Security as recognized in the Withdrawal Agreement.
So from now on there will be a two-step process, first British citizens have to submit their residency applications at the Immigration Office (enclosing the necessary documentation mainly to prove that they have initiated their life in Spain, their economical solvency and to have a valid health insurance for Spain) and once approved, they will need to request the issuance of their 5-year validity cards at the Police Station. Prior to this you should register in the corresponding town hall (empadronamiento).
