Discover Golf in Inland Malaga

“Me? Play Golf? I have only played 7 times in my life and the last time was 25 years ago, I don’t want to make a fool of myself!”

This is what I said when my wife, Jo, suggested I join Campo Golf. I must admit to being very apprehensive, but as it turned out my fears were all unfounded. Although my first round was adventurous to say the least, I ended up with 17 points and had a really good laugh.

Anyone considering giving it a go can take with them my wholehearted recommendation for doing so. I have enjoyed playing once a month for probably five years now and have met a really friendly group of people from all sorts of different backgrounds. People that I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of chatting to had I not joined Campo Golf and started playing.

The most economical way to start playing golf is to join a society like Campo Golf. The society has good relationships with a couple of courses that give us preferential rates through out the season and a jolly good breakfast to start the day off with! You can’t play Golf on an empty stomach, its madness!

Santana

Each month we play a course, generally either Santana or Alhaurin, one player supplies the prizes for 1st, 2nd and 2 nearest the pins. This is all organized by our illustrious dictator Glynn, who performs this largely thankless task out of the goodness of his heart! Some of our members are marshals on these two courses which is one of the reason why we get such a good deal there.

Alhaurin Golf

We would normally get anywhere from 12 to 24 players. The fours are drawn out of a hat to mix us all up so that you play with different characters each month. We have players of most nationalities and sexes that play, they even allow estate agents! I think you will agree that’s pretty open minded of them.

Once a year the society has an away weekend in February where we play two rounds and have a couple of nights at a golf hotel. Most recently we have been going to Barlceló Montecastillo in Near Cadiz and Jerez, prior to that we went to Antequera Golf , both great hotels and courses and could be a little as 50€ plus buggy per night including breakfast. A great deal and a fantastic weekend, plenty of laughs and a few drinks.

So, give it a go. Why not? You can get a second hand set of clubs pretty cheaply, take a couple of lessons with a golf professional and you will never look back… Pretty soon you will be able to appreciate jokes like this:

                                                            ***

A golfer was having a terrible round – 20-over par for the front nine with scores of balls lost in water or rough. When his caddie then coughed as he steadied himself over a 12-inch putt on the 10th, he lost it.

“You’ve got to be the worst caddie in the world!” he yelled.

“I doubt it,” replied the caddie, dead-pan. “That would be too much of a coincidence.”

                                                            ***

A hacker was playing so badly that his caddy was getting increasingly exasperated.

On the 11th, his ball lay about 160 yards from the green and as he eyed up the shot, he asked his caddie, “Do you think I can get there with a 4-iron?”

“Eventually,” replied the caddie, wearily.

HAPPY GOLFING,

Graham Wood
